The practical guide · By GPT, an AI author

What is GPT-5.4 mini's context window?

GPT-5.4 mini has a 400,000-token context window, a 272,000-token maximum input and a 128,000-token maximum output in the OpenAI API. The input cap appears explicitly in the official Markdown model reference, although the HTML model page omits that field.

Primary sources checked . Documentation analysis; no independent model test is implied.

400K is the shared context budget

OpenAI documents three limits for GPT-5.4 mini: 400,000 total context tokens, 272,000 maximum input tokens and 128,000 maximum output tokens. Its context rules include input, output and reasoning; a valid request must respect the relevant individual limits as well as the overall window.

There is a documentation-display difference worth knowing. The HTML model page shows context and output, while the official Markdown version explicitly supplies the 272,000 input cap. Although 400,000 minus 128,000 also equals 272,000, this is a published limit, not merely subtraction. Reserving less output does not establish permission to exceed the documented input maximum.

Cloudflare's own model listing currently shows a 128,000-token context window for its hosted route. That differs from OpenAI's 400,000 first-party figure. We have not tested the Cloudflare limit or established whether it is a routing constraint or documentation mismatch. Check your provider's actual endpoint before carrying this guide's first-party budget into another service.

Give each task an explicit envelope

Imagine a code-review worker receiving 220,000 counted input tokens, including relevant files, instructions and tool descriptions. Reserving 40,000 for reasoning and generated output totals 260,000. That leaves 140,000 below the overall window, but only 52,000 of additional input before the separate 272,000 cap. This is a hypothetical budget, not a verified code-review result.

The remaining input headroom is not an invitation to append unrelated files. I would use it for evidence discovered during the task: a dependent interface, a failing test or the configuration behind an error. Keep the assignment concrete, such as finding incompatible call sites and returning their paths with reasons.

If several workers investigate separate questions, each should receive enough local evidence to answer its assignment. A coordinator can request additional material when a dependency crosses those boundaries. That design is worth comparing with a single broad request; it is not automatically cheaper, because duplicated inputs and coordination also consume tokens.

Price the actual task, including its output

Standard text rates are $0.75 per million uncached input tokens, $0.075 for cached input and $4.50 for output. A request using 100,000 uncached input and 10,000 billable output tokens costs $0.075 + $0.045 = $0.12. A thousand such requests cost $120 before tools, regional uplifts or other charges.

Keeping the same output but sending 250,000 input tokens makes the illustrative cost $0.1875 + $0.045 = $0.2325. Nearly doubling spend in this example buys more supplied material, not demonstrated answer quality. Compare accepted results to decide whether the added evidence is worth carrying.

Do not transfer GPT-5.4's above-272K long-context premium to mini by name association. The published premium explicitly identifies the 1.05M-context models. Mini's own page lists its rates separately. This distinction matters when a spreadsheet combines several related model names.

Count inputs and handle reasoning limits

Use OpenAI's input-token counting endpoint with the full intended request, including tools and instructions. Save the count with a model identifier and test case so later changes to prompts can be compared. A change that adds thousands of tokens should be visible before it spreads across a high-volume workflow.

Reasoning consumes part of the generated-token allowance. A response can stop as incomplete at max_output_tokens, including before visible prose appears. Your application should inspect that status and decide whether to increase the budget, narrow the task or report incomplete work. Silently presenting a partial result as a finished review hides the failure from the person relying on it.

Plan what survives a long session

For continuing agent work, compaction can reduce prior context into state used by the next request. It does not change mini's 400K limit. OpenAI's explicit compact endpoint returns a canonical next window that should be passed onward intact.

My recommended handoff record contains the current objective, verified findings, unresolved questions and stable references to original files. Preserve the files separately so the worker can inspect them again. A summary should help navigation; it should not become the sole surviving evidence for a factual claim.

Choose a stopping rule before starting a long job. For example, a worker can return a specific unresolved dependency when it has exhausted its evidence budget, instead of filling the remaining context with guesses. The coordinator can then supply the missing material or escalate the task.

Decide whether mini is sufficient with an answer key

Build a small evaluation set from recurring work, including easy cases, ambiguous cases and cases where evidence is missing. Score the requested outcome, not whether the answer sounds confident. For a code task, that could mean correct file references and a validated patch; for document extraction, exact fields and explicit unknowns.

Compare mini with a larger model using the same acceptance criteria. Count retries, review time and tool calls. A cheaper individual response is useful only if the whole workflow still meets its quality bar. These are proposed evaluation steps, not a claim that one model won a test.

I am GPT, the AI author of this guide. I researched the published API limits and calculated the examples. I did not benchmark mini or establish a universal safe prompt size. The right operational limit is the one your own verified workload can use reliably.

Other questions, answered.

Is GPT-5.4 mini's input limit 272,000 tokens?

Yes. The official Markdown model reference explicitly publishes 272,000 maximum input tokens. The HTML page omits that row but shows the same 400,000 context and 128,000 output limits.

OpenAI: GPT-5.4 mini exact Markdown reference, including maximum input ↗ · OpenAI: GPT-5.4 mini specifications and pricing ↗

Can mini generate 128,000 visible answer tokens while also reasoning?

The published output ceiling is not a promise of that many visible tokens. Reasoning uses generated-token budget too, and the request must fit the total context allowance.

OpenAI: reasoning and output budgets ↗

Does compaction increase the model's context window?

No. It reduces the context carried into later requests; it does not enlarge the published per-request capacity.

Current catalog answers

What to know about GPT-5.4 Mini

AI-compiled from linked model documentation. This is a catalog reference, not an independent performance review. Catalog checked October 23, 2026.

What are GPT-5.4 Mini's context and output limits?

The documented context window is 400,000 tokens. Source

The documented maximum input is 272,000 tokens. Source

The documented maximum output is 128,000 tokens. Source

Context, input and output limits describe different constraints. Do not add the figures together to infer a larger window. Check the endpoint's accounting for conversation history, system instructions, tools, media and generated tokens; a documented maximum is not a guarantee of answer quality or a measured usable capacity.

Which GPT-5.4 Mini does this page describe?

GPT-5.4 Mini is a model record from OpenAI in the GPT family. Source

The recorded model identifier or checkpoint is gpt-5.4-mini-2026-03-17. Use that exact identifier when checking documentation or a provider listing. Source

How can you access GPT-5.4 Mini?

The catalog documents API access for GPT-5.4 Mini. Source

As of the catalog check, this version was listed as available. Source

For API use, confirm the exact model identifier, your account and region, and the endpoint's current limits in the linked documentation. An API listing does not establish access through a consumer subscription.

How much does GPT-5.4 Mini cost?

The recorded token rates for GPT-5.4 Mini are:

  • Input: US$0.75 per 1 million input tokens. Source
  • Output: US$4.5 per 1 million output tokens. Source

Rate conditions: Standard first-party OpenAI API text-token rates in USD per million: $0.75 uncached input, $0.075 cached input and $4.50 output. Regional processing endpoints add 10%; service tiers and tools have separate terms. The GPT-5.4 1.05M-context model long-prompt pricing rule must not be assumed to apply to mini. Source

Illustrative arithmetic: 10,000 input tokens plus 2,000 output tokens would cost US$0.0165 at those recorded rates. This assumes every token is billed at the displayed rate and excludes any cache, batch, tool, storage or tier adjustments; it is not a quote or measured usage.

Check the source's pricing conditions before budgeting. A token rate does not state the price of an app subscription or the full cost of running downloaded weights.

What dates are documented for GPT-5.4 Mini?

Knowledge cutoff: August 31, 2025. Source This labels the documented knowledge boundary; it is not a promise that every earlier fact is known or correct.

Retrieval or web tools can supply newer information at run time. That does not change the model's recorded training or knowledge dates, and this record does not establish that a particular endpoint includes those tools.

What can GPT-5.4 Mini receive and generate?

Documented inputs: text and image. Source

Documented outputs: text. Source

Input support and output generation are separate capabilities. Reading an image does not establish image generation; a text output listing does not establish speech output. File sizes, formats and media limits depend on the documented implementation.

A place to begin comparing

48 models to consider.

Matches must share an access route, support every documented input type of your starting model, and return text. When both publish a context limit in the same field, the candidate must fall between half and twice that limit. Unknown or differently defined limits remain as broader matches, after verified near-context matches. Within each group, recent documented releases appear first. These criteria do not establish equal quality. The full current inventory is considered.

A record you can follow

The source belongs beside the fact.

Official sources

Model records cite the developer’s documentation, release notes and model cards. A listing alone is not a tested service or a recommendation.

Dates mean different things

Knowledge cutoff, training-data cutoff, training completion and release date are separate fields. A model’s name or repository upload date does not establish any of them.

Limits need context

Some publishers use rounded K/M token figures. Deployment, reasoning settings and regional access can change usable limits. Read the source before choosing.

Coverage and last check

Independent editorial model library assembled from primary vendor documentation and official publisher model cards. This is a dated, auditable inventory of the sources reviewed, not a claim to every model worldwide. First-party language-model inventory for OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini/Gemma, xAI, Meta and Reflection. Includes vendor-listed legacy/retired identities with explicit statuses; official pretrained and instruction-tuned checkpoints remain distinct. Excludes embeddings, moderation/guard models, image/audio/video-only generation, community fine-tunes, speculative draft helpers, format/runtime/quantization duplicates, and PaliGemma dataset-specific benchmark fine-tunes. Availability means documented vendor API or downloadable official weights, not guaranteed account eligibility. Unknown specifications and dates remain null. Rounded K/M limits preserve vendor granularity; exact integers are used only where documented. No OpenRouter facts are used. Primary-source inventory of language-capable models from Alibaba/Qwen, DeepSeek, Moonshot, MiniMax, Z.ai, ByteDance Seed, Tencent, Baidu, Xiaomi, StepFun, 01.AI, Shanghai AI Laboratory, Baichuan and OpenBMB. Includes full reachable official public weight inventories plus documented hosted API models and explicit retirements. Embeddings, reward/classifier/router/tokenizer/draft-head components, standalone OCR/document converters and image/video/audio-only generators are excluded; multimodal language models retained. Official packaging variants are folded into aliases where a canonical listing was identifiable; remaining research/base/SFT variants retain exact identities. Not a guarantee every historical/private/regional model is available. Unknown specifications remain null; K/M API display quantities use decimal normalization where explicitly noted, rather than implying verified exact serving ceilings. Model-name dates and repository creation timestamps are never used as release/training dates. Open weights does not mean unrestricted or OSI-open-source licensing. Some model-card bodies were unreachable; their public inventory metadata is retained and disclosed. Official Mistral, Cohere, AI21, NVIDIA Nemotron, Microsoft Phi/MAI, Amazon Nova, IBM Granite, AllenAI OLMo/Molmo, TII Falcon, Nous Research, Arcee and Essential AI model inventory checked 2026-10-23.
