Free is enough to evaluate whether ChatGPT fits your task. Pay for Plus when broader model access or higher tool limits solve a recurring, identifiable constraint; ordinary text chatting alone is no longer a reliable upgrade argument.

Free is not merely a preview
Free costs $0. In the current Work/Codex guide it includes GPT-6 Luna at Standard speed in the desktop app, subject to rollout. Plus expands the available surfaces to web, CLI, IDE extension and iOS, and includes cloud integrations. Those are specific work entitlements, not a complete list of ordinary Chat features. Free and Plus access
Plus costs $20 monthly. Its documented broader surfaces and model access are useful when a real task requires them. Paying does not establish unlimited use: model choice, context and tools affect consumption. Plus pricing and limits
Try a complete small assignment first
Choose a representative task that does not require confidential information: clean a sample spreadsheet, explain a difficult reading or draft a short brief from supplied sources. Define the output and what would count as failure before beginning.
Inspect the result. Do numbers agree with the input? Are sources real and relevant? Did the assistant preserve the requested constraints? If the workflow does not produce a useful output on a small sample, more allowance may not be the missing ingredient.
Then record the actual limit. If an upload, model or research feature is unavailable, that creates a concrete reason to investigate Plus. If your difficulty is an unclear prompt or untrustworthy source, solve that problem first. These are suggested checks, not outcomes of a head-to-head plan test.
A $20 purchase needs a repeated use case
A recurring monthly expense is easier to justify when it supports a recurring job. A teacher preparing materials, a developer reviewing changes or a small-business owner analyzing reports may have different access needs. Do not compare their value using a single prompt count.
Task size, context, selected model and tools affect usage. Work and Codex share plan usage, so alternating between surfaces does not automatically create a fresh allowance. Plan ahead if both are part of the same project. How usage and shared allowances work
If you only need occasional file analysis, first evaluate whether Free or a lower-cost plan meets the need. Plus is not inherently a better purchase because it is the more familiar paid tier. Conversely, repeated valuable interruptions can justify it even when your total number of chats is small.
Check data and billing separately
An individual paid subscription is not an organizational privacy contract. OpenAI documents different Business, Enterprise and Edu protections; verify the correct account before uploading workplace information. Business-data guidance
Plus lists a monthly price, while ordinary API usage is separately billed. Work and Codex share usage; moving between them does not create a second independent allowance. Check the actual account budget before assigning a long task. Billing and shared usage
Stay on Free while it finishes your permitted work at an acceptable pace. Move to Plus when you can name the useful feature or capacity it adds, then reassess after one billing cycle. Your own record of completed work and necessary corrections is a better purchasing signal than a generic promise that paid AI is always smarter.
