Manus vs ChatGPT: compare the finished assignment and the usage bill

Compare ChatGPT and Manus for research deliverables and delegated multi-step tasks, including review, tool access and usage accounting.

Why this image
I chose an original conceptual illustration of contrasting workflows and a shared review point to support this specific comparison. It is a visual metaphor for the decision, not product-performance evidence.

A wordless gouache painting on warm ivory paper. Two quiet worktables under different archways face a shared central reading desk with a brass magnifying glass. Blank notebooks, books with plain spines and small lamps suggest reading and document work. Both sides are equally inviting and equally prominent. Forest green, sage, ocean teal, restrained ochre, fine architectural ink, subtle tactile paper grain. Hand-painted editorial art, coherent perspective and gentle natural light, landscape composition. Absolutely no writing anywhere: no words, letters, numbers, captions, labels, signs, diagrams, arrows, logos, screens, charts, maps or interface. All surfaces and book spines are blank. No people or robots.

Manus is worth evaluating for delegated, multi-step tasks with visible credit consumption. ChatGPT Work is worth comparing for research and artifact production in its broader workspace; neither should be judged as a text-only chatbot.

Give both services a job with an endpoint

A useful assignment might be to research a small supplier shortlist, create a spreadsheet with source links and turn it into a presentation. Define the required files, the facts that must be verified and the actions that need your approval. Without that endpoint, an agent can appear busy while leaving the actual work unfinished.

Manus documents research, slide generation, scheduled automations and other task workflows. ChatGPT Work documents research, file analysis and deliverables such as documents, spreadsheets and presentations. This makes the comparison one of delegation and review, not a simplistic contrast between an agent and a chatbot. Manus task and plan features ChatGPT Work overview

Follow the work, not just the final message

For the supplier task, require a source for every price and a separate column for information the service could not verify. Inspect the spreadsheet formulas and open the exported presentation. Then change one assumption and see how much of the result you must repair manually. This is a proposed evaluation, not a benchmark we ran.

A service fits the job when its outputs are inspectable and its handoff is clear. If a browser action encounters a login or a document cannot be accessed, the assistant should make that boundary visible. Do not interpret a plausible summary as proof that the underlying action happened.

The billing units are different

Manus's current membership help lists a Pro entry point starting at $20 monthly with 4,000 monthly credits, and another starting at $40 with 8,000. Its detailed credit policy says costs depend on planning, model tokens, virtual machines and external services used during active work. Those credits do not translate into a guaranteed number of completed projects. Manus membership pricing Manus credit accounting

ChatGPT Plus is $20 monthly, with broader allowances on other plans. ChatGPT's usage framework and Manus credits are not equivalent units, so matching monthly prices cannot establish equal capacity. Check the exact feature and allowance you will use. ChatGPT Plus ChatGPT usage and tiers

Manus also distinguishes daily free credits from monthly subscription credits. The detailed policy caps free users' monthly consumption of daily-refresh credits at 1,500. Multiplying the headline 300 daily credits by thirty would therefore overstate that allowance. Monthly credits reset rather than accumulating indefinitely. Daily and monthly credit conditions

Choose after a bounded pilot

Start with public or otherwise approved information, one deliverable and a spending boundary. Record the time you spend correcting work and the usage consumed. If recurring unattended assignments are central, check scheduling and interruption handling. If you mostly need interactive revision, check how easily you can steer the work before it goes too far.

Prefer the service that finishes the specific assignment within an understandable budget. A subscription that generates more activity is not necessarily the one that leaves you with more usable work.
