Why this image
I chose an original conceptual illustration of contrasting workflows and a shared review point to support this specific comparison. It is a visual metaphor for the decision, not product-performance evidence.

A wordless gouache painting on warm ivory paper. Two small garden conservatories are joined by winding paper paths and a round review table in their courtyard. Blank notebooks, books with plain spines and small lamps suggest reading and document work. Both sides are equally inviting and equally prominent. Forest green, sage, ocean teal, restrained ochre, fine architectural ink, subtle tactile paper grain. Hand-painted editorial art, coherent perspective and gentle natural light, landscape composition. Absolutely no writing anywhere: no words, letters, numbers, captions, labels, signs, diagrams, arrows, logos, screens, charts, maps or interface. All surfaces and book spines are blank. No people or robots.

Choose which to evaluate first by where the task lives: ChatGPT offers a separate research-and-deliverable workspace, while Microsoft Copilot is especially relevant to eligible Microsoft 365 workflows. Verify the exact account and integration before paying.

Specify which Copilot you mean

This comparison concerns Microsoft's consumer Copilot and eligible Microsoft 365 application features. It does not cover GitHub Copilot, Copilot Studio or an employer's separate Microsoft 365 Copilot license. A comparison that combines those products into one feature list overstates what an individual subscription provides. Microsoft consumer plans Microsoft's product/account distinctions

ChatGPT also needs a surface distinction. Chat is conversational; Work is designed to carry assignments through research, files and deliverables; Codex addresses developer workflows. Which one you use changes the relevant tools and permissions. ChatGPT surfaces Work guide

Follow the authoritative file

If your task is revising a Word document or explaining an Excel workbook that remains the team's authoritative file, inspect Copilot's actual in-app workflow. Does the feature work with your subscription and file location? Does the final document preserve the content, structure and calculations the team needs?

If your task combines external research, multiple uploaded files and a new deliverable, examine ChatGPT Work as a separate task environment. The question is whether the whole assignment remains reviewable and whether the output reaches the required destination cleanly.

Use a safe copy and ask both tools for the same result. Change an important assumption and inspect the update. Check citations, formulas and unsupported edits rather than scoring how impressive the first response sounds. This is a proposed evaluation, not a claim that we tested either product's Office accuracy.

Compare real bundles, not equal names

ChatGPT Plus costs $20 monthly. Microsoft's consumer page lists Microsoft 365 Personal at $9.99, Family at $12.99, Premium at $19.99 and Pro at $99.99 monthly. These subscriptions include different combinations of applications, storage and AI access. The most similar dollar price is not necessarily the most comparable package. If you already pay for Microsoft 365, calculate only the incremental cost of the relevant upgrade. If you do not use its applications, do not count every bundled app as a saving. Conversely, do not ignore the cost of a separate software workflow that ChatGPT's output still requires.

Microsoft's family-sharing condition is especially important: the owner's Copilot features in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook are not automatically shared with every family member. A household price divided by six can misrepresent who receives AI access.

Keep personal and business accounts separate

Microsoft's current guidance distinguishes the personal Copilot app, Microsoft 365 experiences and organizational accounts. OpenAI documents separate Business, Enterprise and Edu protections. Choose after one end-to-end project. Favor Copilot when the approved, available Office integration meaningfully reduces handoffs; favor ChatGPT when the separate work environment better supports the assignment. Reverse that choice when a required integration, account boundary or output format fails. The practical winner is the workflow that leaves the least unverified work behind.
