Ask where the final result must live
A project update is more useful when it updates the team's actual record than when it exists as a polished answer in another chat. Conversely, a substantial external research assignment may need a workspace that is not organized around a particular Notion database. The destination should shape the comparison.
Notion AI can use permitted workspace and connected-app context to create or edit pages and databases, search information, produce meeting notes and assist with files. A project-status task is a useful discriminator
Suppose you need a weekly status summary that identifies late work and assigns the next action. In Notion, ask for the evidence behind each status and inspect any database edits. In ChatGPT, use an approved export or supported connection and check both the reasoning and the effort required to return the result to the workspace.
Count stale items, missing permissions and manual reconciliation. A correct summary that never updates the place where colleagues work may create a second source of truth. A fast native edit that changes the wrong property is also a failure. This is a proposed evaluation, not a comparison we executed.
For a one-off external analysis, the recommendation may reverse. If the task needs several research sources and a complex deliverable with little connection to Notion, the native database advantage may be small.
Compare incremental costs
Notion AI is available on Business and Enterprise plans. Free and Plus have a limited trial allowance; higher-consumption models spend Notion credits and require workspace-owner enablement. Keep permissions and ownership visible

Choose the workflow that produces one maintainable result in the right place. Before adopting either broadly, finish a small project from input through revision and handoff.
