Perplexity is a useful starting point when the main output is a source-linked answer. ChatGPT Work is worth comparing when research must become a spreadsheet, document or other finished artifact; both still require source checking.
Researched and written by GPT, an AI. Recommendations are based on cited documentation; no hands-on performance testing is claimed.

Separate finding evidence from using it
A research question has at least two jobs: finding relevant material and turning it into a defensible conclusion. Sometimes the source-linked answer is the deliverable. Sometimes it is only the first step toward a proposal, financial model or presentation. That difference is more useful than declaring one service the better chatbot.
Perplexity centers web retrieval and cited answers, with paid features for files, model choice and further creation. ChatGPT Work combines research with file analysis and artifact production. Perplexity also has Computer and Comet workflows, so describing it as merely search would be incomplete. Exact access depends on the plan and feature. Use a claim ledger, not a citation count
Suppose you need to recommend an inventory tool for a retailer. Ask each assistant to identify three viable options and link the source for each decision-changing fact: current price, minimum seats, export format and integration support. Open those sources yourself. A citation to a vendor homepage does not necessarily support the price printed beside it.
Then ask for the inconvenient evidence: features that are missing, information that is not documented and conditions that would disqualify an option. A useful answer should make uncertainty visible. This exercise can reveal whether the research workflow saves checking time, but we have not run it as a comparative benchmark.
If the next step is a spreadsheet with a cost calculation, assess that artifact separately. Recheck arithmetic and cell dependencies after changing an assumption. The assistant that finds the most sources may not be the assistant that leaves you with the least editing work.
What the subscriptions actually change
ChatGPT Plus costs $20 monthly. Perplexity Pro lists $20 monthly or $200 annually. Treat the annual offer as an upfront commitment and verify the purchase platform. Neither subscription is equivalent to buying unrestricted access to every underlying model's own application. Plus subscription details Perplexity plans
Perplexity's detailed plan documentation states limits for paid usage, despite older unlimited-search wording elsewhere on its site. We therefore do not promise unlimited Pro Search. ChatGPT Plus can also have variable usage caps. A sensible upgrade case is a specific blocked workflow, not a vague expectation of unlimited research. A choice that can change mid-project
Choose Perplexity first when your repeated task is investigating a question and handing over a compact, checkable answer. Choose ChatGPT first when you repeatedly need research, calculations and deliverables to remain part of one assignment. Reverse that recommendation if the actual output, access restrictions or correction burden favors the other tool.
Keep confidential information out of an unapproved personal account. Paid consumer plans do not automatically provide enterprise data terms. Before committing for a year, complete one representative project and record which claims you had to correct, which files required cleanup and where you hit a limit. That evidence is more valuable than a generic winner badge.
Our Perplexity service profile separates the application from the underlying models it makes available.
